  • The Gambian government has launched an investigation into the controversial sale of assets seized from former President Yahya Jammeh, following allegations of corruption and lack of transparency.

Public anger erupted after reports surfaced saying some luxury cars, livestock, and equipment were sold below market value, allegedly to government insiders,s while a probe into Jammeh’s wealth was still ongoing.

President Adama Barrow, in a televised address, promised full transparency and confirmed that both parliament and the National Audit Office are conducting parallel investigations. He admitted learning of some sales for the first time and pledged to implement recommendations from the probes.

A government-released list showed the sold assets, including livestock, vehicles, land, and boats. However, some luxury cars, like Jammeh’s Rolls-Royce and Bentley, were missing, raising serious concerns

Meanwhile, no explanation was given for the low prices, though the justice ministry insisted the sales were legal and in the public interest.

However, critics such as opposition MP , Yayah Sanyang and rights groups, have called for an independent investigation, expressing distrust in the current process. Activists also demand a freeze on all future asset sales.

Jammeh, who fled to Equatorial Guinea in 2017 after losing elections, is accused of stealing over $360 million and committing serious human rights abuses during his 22-year rule.
