  • In a dramatic development in the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), President Felix Tshisekedi has announced an aggressive military campaign against advancing M23 rebels, while criticizing the international community's muted response to the escalating crisis.

The situation has reached a critical point with M23 fighters, allegedly backed by Rwanda, securing control of significant portions of Goma, a strategic mineral trading hub. The conflict has triggered a humanitarian emergency, displacing half a million people this month alone and severely straining local resources.

In a televised address, Tshisekedi expressed frustration with global inaction, describing it as "an affront" to his nation. His remarks came as M23 forces expanded their offensive into South Kivu, capturing the districts of Kiniezire and Mukwidja with minimal resistance.

The conflict's impact on Goma has been severe. While some semblance of calm has returned, residents face dire shortages of basic necessities, including food and water. The city's infrastructure has been significantly compromised, with power outages leaving many "cut off from the world," according to local accounts.

The international diplomatic response continues to evolve, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot arriving in Kinshasa for high-level discussions. Meanwhile, regional leaders, through the East African Community, are pushing for a peaceful resolution and urging direct engagement between the DRC government and various stakeholders, including M23.

The crisis has broader implications for regional stability, with Rwanda's involvement being a particular point of contention. While Kigali denies direct military involvement, UN experts have reported evidence of Rwandan troops in DRC territory and their "de facto control" over M23 operations.

As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, with various nations, including the US, China, and EU members, calling for Rwanda's withdrawal from the region. The conflict's resolution remains uncertain, with significant implications for both regional security and the global mineral supply chain, given DRC's crucial role in producing vital electronics components.
