What should have been a season of celebration has turned into a time of grief for many families across the country. Over the festive period, 47 people lost their lives to violent crimes, while 77 others died in road accidents, according to police reports.
The murders, many linked to arguments that spiralled out of control, have left communities shaken. Alcohol and unresolved disputes were often behind these tragic incidents, which cut lives short and left families mourning loved ones during what is meant to be a joyful time.
The roads were no safer. Increased traffic during the holiday season saw a rise in fatal accidents, with reckless driving, speeding, and ignoring traffic rules identified as major causes. The crashes claimed dozens of lives and left others with life-altering injuries. Families travelling to reunite for the holidays instead found themselves dealing with unthinkable loss.
Despite efforts by authorities to increase road safety, including more patrols and checkpoints, the numbers paint a grim picture. The high volume of vehicles, combined with unsafe driving habits, turned the roads into dangerous places.
As the nation reflects on the festive season, these figures are a stark reminder of the need for greater caution—both in how people resolve conflicts and in how they approach road safety. For those who have lost loved ones, this holiday season will forever be marked by sorrow
