A Mberengwa-based artisanal miner died after he was electrocuted in a mine shaft. The incident occurred at Midway Syndicate Mine in Mberengwa, Midlands Province.
Washington Makora the now deceased (age yet to be established) allegedly commenced duty together with four other workmates. Makora and two others went down into a 97-metre-deep shaft while the other two remained outside monitoring electrical switches.
Ngonidzashe Gashura (41), who had gone down the shaft with Makora, got out of the shaft to fix an electrical problem with their pump. Upon returning, he was met with a bout of smoke coming from the shaft. It was discovered that Makora had been electrocuted and died on the spot.
Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, called for caution on electrical faults and fittings
"Technical jobs, such as fixing electrical fittings in this case, should always be done by qualified personnel," Mahoko said.
