  • Zimbabwe's car owners are facing a new legal requirement that mandates purchasing a radio license from the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) before they can renew their vehicle licenses or insurance. This development follows the recent approval of amendments to the Broadcasting Services Act, which aim to strengthen revenue for the national broadcaster.

Under the new regulations, motorists must obtain a valid ZBC radio license to complete necessary transactions with the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA) and motor insurance companies. The license will cost approximately $23 per quarter or $92 per year, contributing to anticipated revenue increases for the ZBC.

The government states that this measure is intended to improve compliance with existing laws that require all car radios to be licensed. Critics, however, have expressed concerns regarding the financial burden this places on vehicle owners, especially in a country grappling with economic challenges.

As the new law takes effect, the impact on both car owners and the broader broadcasting landscape in Zimbabwe remains to be seen.
