Jordan Cox's aspirations of making his Test debut for England against Zimbabwe are now uncertain after he sustained a side injury while batting for Essex in a County Championship match. The incident occurred immediately after the 24-year-old reached a century against Somerset, forcing him to retire hurt.
Cox had been included in the 13-man squad for the upcoming Test at Trent Bridge, scheduled from May 22-25, but the injury now casts doubt on his participation. This setback comes after he previously missed a potential debut in New Zealand due to a broken thumb sustained in the nets.
Essex director of cricket Chris Silverwood confirmed that Cox would undergo a scan to determine the severity of the injury. Silverwood acknowledged Cox's unfortunate luck with England call-ups but praised his century, highlighting his talent.
With established players like Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and potentially Ben Stokes (depending on his recovery from a hamstring issue) likely to fill the top-order positions, Cox was expected to serve as a reserve batter. However, his injury could open the door for Ben McKinney, a 20-year-old from Durham, who has been linked to the squad.
England is set to play a one-off Test match against Zimbabwe, followed by five home Tests against India starting on June 20 and an away Ashes series in Australia beginning in November.
