Liverpool FC has officially retired the number 20 jersey in honour of Diogo Jota. This comes after the tragic death of the Portuguese forward in a car crash yesterday.
The decision comes following the season in which Jota helped secure Liverpool’s 20th league title.
“The No. 20 will be rightly immortalised for his contributions as part of Liverpool’s 2024-25 title-winners,” said a statement shared on X.
“Jota's trademark shimmy and strike in front of the Kop to seal victory in April’s Merseyside derby was a poignant last goal of his life.
"A number full of meaning, the symbolism of No. 20 runs deep for Liverpool fans. Jota wore the number, helped deliver the club’s 20th league title, and passed away in 2025 at the age of 28.
“Joined in 2020. Wore the number 20. Won number 20,” wrote The Anfield Buzz
Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and made an immediate impact. By his 21st appearance, he had already scored 10 goals, including a memorable Champions League hat-trick against Atalanta. From there he went on to lift multiple trophies, including the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and the Premier League.
